This quilt batting calculator helps determine the size of batting needed for a quilt project. Enter the finished quilt width and length along with extra margin for quilting to estimate the batting size required.
How to Calculate Quilt Batting Size
Quilt batting should be slightly larger than the quilt top to allow for quilting and trimming. Most quilters recommend adding several inches of extra batting on each side of the quilt.
Example:
Quilt width + (extra margin × 2) = batting width
If a quilt measures 60 × 72 inches and you add 4 inches of extra batting on each side (this can be changed to your desired size), the batting size would be:
60 + (4 × 2) = 68 inches wide
72 + (4 × 2) = 80 inches long
